Satellite L305 locks up after boot.

My uncle handed me his Satellite L305-55919 to take a look at.

It's running Windows Vista Basic.

Shortly after bootup in normal windows mode, it locks up. They keyboard does nothing. The mouse cursor does move around via the trackpad but doesn't help much - the clicks don't register with the OS and nothing will launch.

Windows Safe Mode is a different story. It seems to work fine. Everything launches and it never locks up.

However, there is one thing that makes me learn towards being a disk issue.

Sometimes when I boot up in safe mode, as the list of drivers scroll by, it stays on crcdisk.sys for a few minutes before continuing on - and sometimes it reboots once it gets to crcdisks.sys.

I download a Vista startup disk and run chkdsk c: /f.

Every time I run it (and I've run it several times), it says "Windows has made corrections to the file system"

Screeshot is below. My only reservation about it is that I wouldn't think safe mode would work all that well if the disk was corrupt. Any ideas?

Satellite L305-S5919

Downloads here.

Good start. Let's run it this way now (which will take longer)

   chkdsk c: /r

After autochk runs during the restart, you get an entry in Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc). Expand Windows Logs and look in the Application log for an Information event with Event ID 1001 from Source Wininit at the time Windows started.

Don't try to copy anything from there. Double-click the event and then click the Copy button. That will put the details on your clipboard. Paste it without editing into your reply - except we want only what's above the line Event Xml:.

Probably the driver that follows crcdisk.sys is the culprit.

You can discover that by running Microsoft's LoadOrder.

   LoadOrder v1.0

It's safe to click on "Run LoadOrder now from Live.Sysinternals.com" over on the right side. I have just run it on my 32-bit Vista machine and attached the result.

Re: Satellite L305 locks up after boot.

You know what - I think the chkdsk /r switch may  have fixed it.

I just booted it back up in normal mode. It would never give me more than 60 seconds before freezing up.

Right now it's been up for several minutes and going strong.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a bit longer and report back.

...and it was still running fine the next day.

But later on it was locked up solid. So, I'm guessing it's probably a bad hard drive.

Probably. The way to make sure it's not software is to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media.
