Windows 8 E-SATA Problem

I have two Toshiba Satellite laptops (L505-GS5035 & L505-ES5011) and two Toshiba 2TB esata/USB 2.0 external hard drives (PH3200U-1EXB).

One PC is running Windows 7 (L505-ES5011) and the other is dual boot Windows 8 and 7 (L505-GS5035).

On Windows 7 (both laptops) I have no problems connecting either of the esata drives.

On Windows 8 one of the esata drives works fine the other is not recognized. The difference in the drives is that one is FAT32 format and the other is NTFS (gen2). The FAT32 works in Windows 8. I do seem to remember that it took me awhile to get it working.

Both external hard drives work when connected to a USB port. The problem is with the esata and only Windows 8.

I suspect the problems is with drivers, but cannot figure why one HDD works and the other doesn't, being the same make and model. Edit: The drive that is not working in Windows 8 is newer (gen2).

Does Windows 8 have a problem with NTFS and esata?

I should also mention that, when I plug in the drive that is not recognized and power it up then power up the laptop, the laptop freezes right before the boot options screen.

All 64bit Windows and AHCI is enabled in the Bios.

Once again, the drive in question works fine on Windows 7 on the same laptop.

I have posted this question on answers.microsoft.com, because I think the problem is with Windows 8 (drivers, software conflict, etc...). I don't believe it to be a hardware issue.

Any help is appreciated.

Yes, Dan, an interesting situation. I don't find your post there now.

Re: Windows 8 E-SATA Problem

E-sata is not an external connection, of course. It just looks that way.

So we are talking about the difference between accessing FAT32 and NTFS internal SATA drives in Windows 8.

I would want to investigate what shows in Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) in the two cases.

the other is not recognized

Where?

What shows in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc)?

Re: Windows 8 E-SATA Problem

Here are screen shots taken from the same PC. (Windows 7 and 8)

When I plug the gen2 drive into the PC the HD light lights up on the drive and the laptop, but the HD does not show up in Windows explorer, disk management or device management.

I have got it to show in device management by running the device troubleshooter, but it does not show in disk management or assign it a drive letter.

BTW, thanks for taking an interest.

No pictures for Windows 8 NTFS?

Seems to me most interesting that the same drive can be used when formatted to FAT32, but not when NTFS. Can you find any other differences in Device Manager and Disk Management between those two situations?

This registry key is the one that keeps track of recognized disks.

Re: Windows 8 E-SATA Problem

Are you willing to run some experiments?

I wonder if the FAT32 drive will disappear if it's reformatted to NTFS.

And whether the NTFS drive will turn up if it's reformatted to FAT32.

IOW, is it the difference that matters.

Re: Windows 8 E-SATA Problem

I'm willing to reformat the ntfs to fat32, I am not willing to format the fat32 drive, unless I back it up first. I have over 1tb of info on it that I don't want to loose. The fact is that I want to have both drives formatted to NTFS to rid myself of the 4gb file limit of FAT32.

What I will do now is backup the files I have on the NTFS drive then format it to fat32. I'll let you know when that is done.

Re: Windows 8 E-SATA Problem

Update: I formatted the drive FAT32 both 32k and 64k clusters. I formatted it in Windows 7 through the esata cable using EaseUS Partition Master 9.2.1 Home Edition. Still no change. Can't get Windows 8 to install it. Works fine in Windows 7 with any format. This has me puzzled! Still esata not working in Windows 8, but USB works fine.

Here's a list of drivers running on Windows 8:

I'll try to see if I can find which one is causing problems, if any.

If you can see a FAT32 drive with Windows 8, please try reformatting it to NTFS using a native Windows 8 tool - either diskmgmt.msc or diskpart.exe.

Re: Windows 8 E-SATA Problem

I'll do that when I get the drive backed up. In the mean time, I did a refresh install of Windows 8 and no change. In fact, if I run Windows 8 setup with the gen2 drive plugged in, the setup fails, crashes, freezes, etc...

I do, in fact, think the 2nd Generation drive uses different firmware than the gen1 drive, that is not compatible with Windows 8. I'm with you on finding out if it's a NTFS problem, it's just gonna take me awhile to do it. I'm also a bit reluctant. If it ain't broke! :-)

I'll keep you posted.

Here's the latest screen shot of the drive, now showing, in disk management:

I've decided to use it for system backups, since it works fine outside of Windows 8. I'm done, for now, trying to get it working. If someone knows the solution to this, I'm willing to listen.
