I have a Toshiba Satellite that came pre-installed with WIN 8, and I've just upgraded to 8.1. Unfortunately, I use a USB device with a security chip that no longer recognizes the USB ports. The device maker says that either the security chip maker, or Microsoft needs to come up with a solution,. So.......can I easily revert back to Win8 using the so-called hidden partition, or was that hidden partition modified by the WIN 8.1 upgrade ?? I didn't make recovery discs until AFTER the upgrade. So, are the recovery discs I made now Win 8.1 discs, or did the laptop use the hidden partition and make win 8 discs with the original WIN8 that was pre-installed??

The recovery discs are the same. That's because the recovery partition is still the same. So you can restore to factory directly from the partition.
Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery tab > Recovery tab > Refresh your PC without affecting your files
