The MS Office 2010 that ships with most laptops is a Trial version that allows you up to 25 total launches. You must purchase a MS Office Product Key that matches the software application installed in order for it to activate properly.
i.e., if you have the MS Office 2010 Pro edition installed then you must purchase a Pro liscense to get the proper 25 didgit key code. If you have the Home and business version then you must purchase a H&B liscence...etc.

Following is from the fine print in the spec above.
Microsoft Office Starter 2010. Office Starter consists of reduced-functionality versions of Word and Excel with advertising. PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access and Publisher are not included.
Includes Microsoft Office 2010 preloaded. Purchase a Product Key to activate a full Microsoft Office 2010 suite.
So you can use Starter with no strings. In order to use the real Office 2010, you must purchase a product key.

In case that's not sufficient: We can't see what you're doing. You'll need to explain in far more detail. And any error message you provide is useless unless you quote it exactly on a line by itself. Otherwise, we cannot look it up.

In addition to the advice already given...
Where are you getting the Product key that you are entering? It isn't the one from the bottom of the computer that you need. I believe that for the Office products there is a card in the documentation someplace with the correct key on it, it's basically just a post card size piece of heavy paper with the product key hologram sticker on it.
