StartupRepairOffline-NoRootCause-6.1.7600.16385

 I have a Satellite A505-S6980 running Windows 7 - 64bit.

Yesterday it started to bog down for a couple of minutes, then work fine, then repeat.  I tried closing programs and nothing was responding, so I hit CTL-ALT-DLT, and there was no response to that either, then everything basically went blank and all I could see was my desktop.  Since I couldn't restart properly I restarted it using the power key, and windows startup detected problems, went through it's repair sequence several times, and was unable to fix anything.  The problem signature follows:

Problem Event Name:  StartupRepairOffline

Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385

Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385

Problem Signature 03: unknown

Problem Signature 04: 21201083

Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover

Problem Signature 06: 2

Problem Signature 07: NoRootCause

OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

Locale ID: 1033

To my recollection nothing new has been installed or changed lately other than the usual windows updates (last of which was 12/03/2010).  I attempted system restore to a date about 2 weeks ago and that did not work.   As of last night I have been unable to start up.

And FYI - I'm not technically proficient so if you have any suggestions, make them as simple as possible!  If it is not something a novice can do, feel free to recommend that I enlist the help of a professional.

So you know how to reach the Windows Recovery Environment. Right?

How to launch the Windows Recovery Environment

At that command prompt, run this (which may take a while) and try Windows again.

   chkdsk /r

If that doesn't work, at the same command prompt try this and reboot.

   bootrec /RebuildBcd

Re: StartupRepairOffline-NoRootCause-6.1.7600.16385

chkdsk /r gave the following:

The type of the file system is NTFS.

Cannot lock current drive.

Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.

bootrec /RebuildBcd

gave the following:

Scanning all disks for Windows installations.

Successfully scanned Windows installations.

Total identified Windows installations: 0

The operation completed successfully.

CHKDSK is verifying files <stage 1 of 5>...

239104 file records processed.

File verification completed.

261 large file records processed.

0 bad file records processed

0 EA records processed.

44 reparse records processed.

ICHKDSK is verifying indexes <stage 2 of 5>...

298616 index entries processed

INdex verification completed.

0 unidexed files scanned.

0 unindexed files recovered.

CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors <stage 3 of 5>...

Security descriptor verification completed.

29757 data files processed.

CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal...

37675888 USN bytes processed.

Usn Journal verification completed.

CHKDSK is verifying file data <stage 4 of 5>...

.....

And it has been stuck on stage 4 of 5 for about 15-20 minutes now.

"11 percent complete. <36086 of 239088 files processed>" is the last line that it has been stuck on for a while now.  I know you said it would take a while, but is it normal for it to take this long on one file? (as I said, it's been saying that at least 15-20 minutes now.)

If doesn't move on, nevertheless leave it alone all night if necessary.

Re: StartupRepairOffline-NoRootCause-6.1.7600.16385

If it doesn't move on by morning, what's the safest way to stop the process?  Just "X" out of the command prompt box? type exit?

Re: StartupRepairOffline-NoRootCause-6.1.7600.16385

Ok, it finally completed.  Here's how it ended:

11 percent complete. <36086 of 239088 files processed>

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 36154

Of name \Windows\Fonts\upcjb.ttf.

11 percent complete. <43154 of 239088 files processed>

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 43237

Of name \Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-rasman_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600

11 percent complete. <44730 of 239088 files processed>

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 44800

of name \Windows\winsxs\AMBDC6~1.205\ksecdd.sys.

11 percent complete. <89624 of 239088 files processed>

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 220252

of name\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NETWOR~1\AppData\Local\MICROS~1\MEDIAP~1\ARTCAC~1\LocalMLS\{AC120~1.JPC.

239088 files processed.

File data verification completed.

CHKDSK is verifying free space <stage 5 of 5>...

86882990 free clusters processed.

Free space verification is complete.

Adding 45 bad clusters to the Bad Clusters File.

Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.

Windows has made corrections to the file system.

475651071 KB total disk space.

127646904 KB in 207463 files.

114796 KB in 29758 indexes.

180 KB in bad sectors.

357231 KB in use by the system.

65536 KB occupied by the log file.

347531960 KB available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.

118912767 total allocation units on disk.

86882990 allocation units available on disk.

Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50.

X:\sources\recovery\Tools>

X:\sources\recovery\Tools>

X:\sources\recovery\Tools>chkdsk c: /r

And that's where it sits.  Do I now "X" out and restart? Type "exit" and restart?  Something else?

Forget that last question - I tried restarting, and it is still doing the same thing.

Re: StartupRepairOffline-NoRootCause-6.1.7600.16385

Run chkdsk c: /r from that command prompt again. I might be faster this time.

Re: StartupRepairOffline-NoRootCause-6.1.7600.16385

You might try this again.

   bootrec /RebuildBcd

If that fails (and it probably will), looks like the next thing to do is worry about rescuing important files.
