My Toshiba satellite built-in microphone stopped working suddenly.
So far, i have done the following:
- updated the Audio drivers
- installed service pack 2 for Vista
I test it by recording my voice. I made a skype call today and in the middle of the conversation
the microphone died. The guy on the other end could not hear me. Same thing happened
yesterday. Skype however may have nothing to do with it. I record myself when I turn on
my computer - some days I hear nothing but white noise on first recording. Some day, first
recording is good, and then the microphone dies.
It stopped working 3-4 days ago. Would appreciate any help to fix this problem. thanks,

Thanks for your suggestion. But I had re-installed a newer version of the driver
after the microphone stopped working. This is what I have right now:
Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Driver date: 7/28/2009
Driver version: 18.104.22.16804
Do you want me to go back and get the older version you suggested?

I re-installed the driver version you suggested. That does not solve the problem.
When I look at System Restore, the earliest restore point I get is when I installed
Service Pack 2. I only did this installation to get rid of the problem - the problem
started before this. So, I am lost as to how to proceed.

As I mentioned before, skype may have nothing to do with it.
I try recording myself everyday in the morning after I turn on my computer.
Some days the first recording works and some days it doesn't.
If it works, then I try recording myself again and the second time when I play
back, it doesn't work. Either way, skype is not involved at all.
What would be the best way to debug it from on here?

Try using a clean startup to determine if anything else is interfering. You can find out more here.
If it happens even using a clean startup, it may be an intermittent hardware failure.
