@Susan,
Yes you can still try to download the Software. Just go to "Download" and look for you computer model from the list of computer models there. After that Refine the Search by changing "All Categories" and change it to "DVD" or "DVD-ROM" it will show you all downloads related to DVD.

I had similar problem in my Satellite A305-S6825 Laptop running Windows Vista. I clicked on star/Computer/right click on properties/highlight dvd drive,which in my case is Panasonic/properties/reset settings. It said " the drive could not be idendified.Error code 39" So from there I knew that something was wrong with the driver software for the DVD. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it again. It would not reinstalled and gave the same error code. I called the Toshiba support. Now, this is what worked. Go to gur.in website. On left side bar click Registry Tweeks/from the table which shows up select "restore missing cd drive" and follow the steps. Restart the computer and all is well. This whole problem was due a glich in the windows update. But to err is human so it is forgiven.

Well regarding "error code 39" with the DVD driver, you'll just have to remove the upper filter and lower filter from the Registry and restart the computer. This issue seems to be evident for both XP and VISTA.
Use this as your reference:
The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista
