Re: new tv.... dolby digital not working through optical audio output

I have the wx800. so I guess I am glad it is not just me. After about an hour of monkeying with my direct tv receiver output settings, and then my pioneer input settings, finally did the google and got here. So it is very hokey to have an optical out that apparently is not putting out the true surround signal, but I guess that is the case. Regarding the recommendations 1) just run everything through your receiver first and then output to tv: Not really what I was wanting to do. Most of the time I just wanna watch tv or play games and the hokey tv speakers are fine. Don't want to have to power up my receiver and associated energy costs all the time. 2) run the hdmi to the tv for the video, and the separately run an optical cable to the receiver for surround audio: a fine solution, but like most recovers mine has only 2 optical in. So I can cover my sat receiver and my ps3, but not my other devices. I don't get it. I want video and sound all the time with turning on the minimum of crap. Occasionally, I want to kick things up and turn on the receiver and have the surround experience. I would guess this is pretty typical for most users, but folks it seems there is really no easy way to do so given this hokey arrangement where the tv does not put out what it gets in (puts out a crappy sub audio signal from a digital optical out, even though every other electronic device in the world puts out a true surround output from the optical out...I thought that was the entire purpose of optical out)

Re: new tv.... dolby digital not working through optical audio output

Hey folks...I just purchased one of these TV's yesterday.

Should I return it ASAP, as lots of people are complaining?

I want a Blu-Ray 5.1 connected via HDMI to result in a 5.1 output on the TV's SPIDF optical output. Not possible?

Re: new tv.... dolby digital not working through optical audio output

I have 40RV52R. I also monkeyed around and could not understand why Dolby Digital 5.1 was not passing through until I read through this thread. I certainly wish I knew this was an issue before acquiring this TV. I am using it with an old Bose 321 Series II sound system that does not have HDMI, and only one optical audio input, so I need an optical audio splitter if I want to have two devices with 5.1 sound. My TV does passthrough digital on HDMI 1, but not on HDMI 2 or HDMI 3--bizarre.

Re: new tv.... dolby digital not working through optical audio output

I have 2 words for everyone: Buyer Beware! My wife came home with a new toaster oven yesterday. With this model you have to preheat the toaster before putting the bead in.... Who knew??? Even the salespeople in the store don't know this! It's going back! These weird designs and features show up eveywhere! You'd think the designers and whatnot would try to emulate Steve Jobs and his way of thinking about products....its the difference between mediocracy and greatness! Good luck everyone with your purchases! And don;t buy on a whim! Do you research first to avoid disappointment (if at all possible... even the toaster web site does not say you have to preheat to make toast) ! regards, Terry

Message to Jim, Toshiba Moderator

I have been the owner of model 40E220U for barely a day and joined this group for help.

It is incomprehensible to me that your company does not provide a 30-day handholding period during which we can get first-hand help by email or phone. Or better yet, that someone monitor this forum FULL-TIME for I found many requests for help most of which linger with a goose egg in hopes of getting solved - the blind leading the blind.

There was no manual other than a single sheet that has more disclaimers and info on warranties than advice on how to use the product. The phone number you supplied so kindly should be printed on what is erroneously and misleadingly called EASY SETUP GUIDE. The advice to consult the dealers is ludicrous because they cannot be expected to have the knowledge essential for these sophisticated machines.

I wonder how many of your customers are returning units that are perfectly functional but fail to be user friendly in that they don't even address settings of brightness, closed-captioning or limitations which I personally never experienced with the old CRTs.

I am a happy Toshiba laptop and Dell owner and thus consider myself fairly computer-literate but this television is going back to the dealer some 90 miles away. The old JVC will be back in service on Friday when I come back from the city.

If I had any reason to believe that a more expensive model would be easier to install - with a reliable manual to cover essentials - I'd be happy to spend the extra money.

birdy176, the forum is monitored. The user's guide is available on our support site. You can find it here.

Were you having a particular problem with which I could help?

Edit: I just replied in your other thread!

Re: Message to Jim, Toshiba Moderator

There was a Firmware Update issued in May or June of 2011 for LCD TV Model 55HT1U (Document #98083642).  It indicates that it corrects various Audio and Video issues.  Are details available on what it specifically corrects?  Does it address the 5.1 "pass through" concern?
