Loss of Closed Captioning

I have a model 40XV645U that has lost Closed Captioning ability.

I have updated firmware, latest available dated 7/28/11 from Toshiba Web Site, V6.1.46.0.

Closed captioning worked until recently (2/12).

CC became erratic, and eventually stopped being displayed altogether.

Any attempt to re-enable CC via the Preferences & Setup menus is unsuccessful.

Preferences (for CC) will always revert to "OFF".

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

lcdtvuser

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

Try resetting the TV to factory defaults. From the "SETUP" menu, select "Reset TV." If a PIN code has been set, you'll need to enter it. Then confirm by select "Yes."

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

Thank you for your prompt reply & suggestion.

I have many custom settings and was reluctant to perform this reset.  I did perform the "Reset to Factory" as I have been unable to find any other recommendation.

The Reset did not solve the condition. I recorded and returned all custom settings.

I welcome any other suggestions for enabling CC's.

Thank You

Did you make any other changes before you lost the closed captioning?

I just wanted to confirm - it's not just that they don't appear, but they can't even be enabled in the settings, correct?

And you're trying to do view captions on the same signal as usual? (In other words, same cable provider, same cable box, etc.)

Edit: I should add that I'm sorry the reset didn't help and that you had to go through that trouble.

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

Peter,

Thank You again for the rapid relpy.

"Did you make any other changes before you lost the closed captioning?"

I have owned this TV since Nov 2010 (2+ years).  I haven't made any changes to setings for about the last year.

"it's not just that they don't appear, but they can't even be enabled in the settings, correct?"

Yes, this is the case.

"And you're trying to do view captions on the same signal as usual?"

Yes, no signal sources have been altered.  TV source is, and always has been, Broadcast (aka, OTA).

Optional sources (no attempt ever for CC use) are:

VCR (Composite video)

DVD Player (Component video)

DVR (HDMI)

P.S.

Loss of CC was gradual.  Intermittent appearance and loss starting about 2 months ago (TV enabled & disabled CC on its own) until the present state (just recently) where CC never appears and "Preferences/CC and Digital Audio Selectors" menu always shows CC in OFF state, even directly after re-selecting CC as ON (English), backing out one step, then re-entering "CC and Digital Audio Selectors".

Note: "Setup/TV Settings/Closed Caption Settings" retains a proper ON setting.

Thank You,

George

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

Unfortunately, I can't find any information on this type of problem. The TV may need servicing. I'm sorry I can't help more, but you may want to check in the future. Someone in the community here might have an idea.

46XV645U Identical issue. Did you ever hear of a solution?

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

Nope; I just live without CC.  And I really do like to use the function as my hearing isn't the best. Setting the volume louder or adjusting the audio tone doesn't always help, so I rely on CC, especially for non-American English programs (such as BBC sourced material).

Hopefully someone will come up with a solution that works.  If I could guess, it appears to be a software/firmware issue rather than a hardware issue.  CC sometimes just "pops up", and without warning, shuts itself off.

P.S.

I hope that Toshiba places a dedicated CC button on future remotes.  All TV's (and DTV Converter boxes) I had in the past (including analog) had a CC button on the remote, making for easy access.  This is the 1st TV without this feature. Toshiba, are you listening???

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

George,

I had a Toshiba authorized repair guy come out and check my TV. After making sure I was using the right settings, he offerred to call the factory repair guys and/or take the TV in for a big diagnostic. I haven't heard back from him.

In the meantime I upgraded from basic Comcast cable (with Showtime) to HD - which provided a new HD cable box, replacing the DCT700. This HD box provides captions itself, as opposed to letting the TV do the decoding. An extra $8.95 a month. I figured by the time I got done "fooling" around with the Toshiba I would be time ahead, and have my captions back.

It looks to me like something in the Toshiba electronics has failed.

Thanks for your reply. Good luck to you.

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

shb, what model do you have? Is it the same model number?

This is helpful for us to know trends.

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

Much the way the user (rashbaugh3) above has done, I too must use an alternate tuner to obtain CC.  I wouldn’t find this too annoying except for the fact that my alternate DTV tuner (a DVR) has only a Standard Definition output.  I wouldn’t have purchased this higher end REGZA model if I had known that I would still end up watching a lower resolution (480) picture.  Hopefully, someone will investigate this issue and come up with a fix.

George

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning **SOLVED IN MY CASE**

I had the same loss of captioning on a friend's 40XV645U (with mfg date July 2009) after more than a year of proper operation.  Selection in Preferences & Setup menu of CC1 caption source would not stick.  There would be no captioning and source would have switched back to CC3 when we went back to selection menu again. Going through full reset didn't help, nor did leaving the set unplugged for a day. However today I updated the TV set's firmware to 6.14.46.0 (downloaded from support.toshiba.com) and the problem was solved. Captioning is working once again, much to the relief of my hearing impaired friend.

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning **SOLVED IN MY CASE**

Hi,

I am having very similar problems with my Regza 47ZV650U.  The closed caption setting keeps reverting to T1 when I keep setting it to CC1.  And sometimes the closed captioning will turn itself on and off.  I had been using the closed captioning ever since I bought the TV 2 years ago, and all of a sudden it won't work properly.  There have been no source/input changes.

I tried resetting the TV, but that didn't help.

I would like to try to update or re-install the firmware, but I can't find any downloads for the Regza 47ZV650U on the support.toshiba.com site.  How can I get the latest firmware for this model?

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

No CC whatever on our brand new (12/2012) 32C120U. Am connected thru a Direct TV HD converter. I infer from this and other Toshiba fora that there is no intelligence in my 32120U to produce the closed captioning by itself. Captioning must be produced in the converter box instead. Do I have it right? If so, this is a severe defect. When I press C.CAPTION on the Toshiba remote, 'Not Available' appears in red. I've enabled CC1 during set-up, and CC1 appears in the Preferences screen.

CC worked perfectly in my 15 year old analog TV even when connected thru the DTV HD converter. Progress this ain't!

I bought my 32C120U from Amazon and returning it will be a hassle, but we'll be forced to do so I'm afraid. Can anyone help before I head to the Post Office? Thanks in advance!

Re: Loss of Closed Captioning

MY BAD and I apologize for the preceding forum entry. I had failed to set-up my DTV HD converter correctly, and the problem is solved. :smileyhappy:
