USB cable/external hard drive issues

Hi I put some movies and ebooks on an external hard drive (just got it, My Passport Essential SE)

when I go to the USB part of my note book it says "usb storage not connected."

Can I even do this? ( I'm not very good with this stuff)

Re: USB cable/external hard drive issues

Yes you can, but there are limits. First, the hd must be formatted in exfat, an alternate to NTFS, which is Microsoft. But Microsoft will format it and read it fine. Second, no one file may be larger than 2 gig.

Re: USB cable/external hard drive issues

With an NTFS mounting application I copied files larger than 2GB (barely - 2.14GB), and watched them with yxplayer2.

So far I've only used NTFS formatted external drives, so I'm not sure how it works without the mounting application. You probably need to mount them - You might need an application to do so.

Re: USB cable/external hard drive issues

I am having nothing but problems with my USB. I have reformatted all 4 of my external hard drives to exFat and the Thrive will not connect to any of them. All of them turn on and light up but cant access any of them. They all work with my pc. My SD works fine BTW.   Another problem, My sideloder program does not see the thrive when connected to the mini usb port. It shows up in my computer as at100. Anyone know a sideload program that works with this thing?

So far it works good as a car stereo/gps but thats about it. Almost sad i did not buy the Ipad2. What good is the usb if you can't use it for storage anyway. That's pretty much the only reason I bought this stupid headache of a machine

Re: USB cable/external hard drive issues

You can use the thrive for storage, but it attaches as a Multimedia Device, not as a mass storage device. You can't install side load software to it, as it's not attached as a "drive", and this is by intent.

As for hard drives attached to it, it may be a power issue. The thrive doesn't have a lot of power to give the USB port, so some devices may not work without a secondary power source. Or a USB Power injection cable.

Re: USB cable/external hard drive issues

I copy to the Thrive with windows by going to My Computer and then clicking on At100. Windows Explorer comes up and you can then access the Thrive. I bring up Windows Commander and use it to copy from/to the Explorer window but a second Explorer window would work as well.

Re: USB cable/external hard drive issues

Since you seem to know what are you talking about (lol), How do I reformat a Seagate1 Expansion Portable Drive to X-FAT 1T so it can work with the Thrive 32g? Will it even work with the Trive after reformating it?

Re: USB cable/external hard drive issues

I have a thrive 32gb as well. from what I get from toshiba support, you can use up to a 32gb usb flash drive. I bought a 500GB My PassPort drive and found out the hard way.

If ANYONE has any other suggestions on how to attach more storage to the usb or mini usb port it would be much appreciated to know..

Thanks in advance
