recovery without cd drive [SOLVED]

[ Edited ]

hello

I have a satellite l355d-s7825

the cd/dvd drive does not recognize in bios (no optical drive)

the hard drive went south along with vista, replaced hard drive

I have recovery cds & an external cd drive but this unit will not boot from external cd

will boot usb drives though

currently I have linux installed but would like to get vista back on this thing

I tried winusb, get to recovery options but asks for cd/dvd. plugin my external, but it wont look at it for install media.

I can access command prompt from winusb boot, but cant seem to get vista-install to start

I can create a partition & put recovery disks to it but dont know if that would do any good

please advise

thanks

If you want to keep that computer, I would replace the optical drive. These part numbers should fit.

V000120910 - V000121710V000120930 - V000120920

It's easy to change. See Step 3 here.

Re: recovery without cd drive

I have a replacement optical drive, 2 of them.

niether is recognized by bios or linux.

telling me that channel of the motherboard is shot.

I have in the past had a desktop that lost its communication with built in usb, then a few months later didnt recognize paralel port. which a bios flash fixed.

but from what I have seen & read bios update is done via cd or within windows.

niether of which is an option.

If you don't have one of the part numbers I gave you, they may not be compatible.

Re: recovery without cd drive

both drives match those models, and still do not get recognized. they do work in an external enclosure

Re: recovery without cd drive

If it won't even accept an optical drive, I would replace that old computer.

Re: recovery without cd drive

There is another way.

Download a Windows image, transfer the image to a thumbdrive and boot from USB.

It works in the same way a diskdrive does. Check the link below:

Re: recovery without cd drive [SOLVED]

aconcengco  thanks for the idea

heres the fix

create bootable usb from another vista box

instead of copying another copy of vista copy the info from recovery disks

once booted into toshiba recovery options clicking on toshiba wizzard it asked for dvd's

so I unplugged usb without rebooting & plugged in external drive in same usb port

hit wizzard wallah system recovered

flashed the bios still no optical drive from internal oh well I got the work around

now to find out what all the extra partitions on this disk is for to make room for linux multiboot

thanks again
