Just wanted to put in my 2 cents. I am currently trying to restore the out-of-box install on a replacement hard drive (Western Digital Scorpio Blue, one of the ones listed in the original post at NewEgg). I too had the problem with Windows Update and did the step recommended here. That got Windows Update working and it is now crunching several updates on my Satellite C655-S5068. Thanks very much for the information!
The updater is still running so I am not yet able to verify that missing drivers will load. When I have done the reformat/install (3rd time so far...), it seems to be doing just fine until a certain point in the install then icons disappear and drivers don't work (wifi being the main one I see that won't work). When the install finishes, there is only one icon, the recycle bin. Other icons are not there, although the software appears to be installed correctly (for things such as the MS Office trial and the Toshiba apps). I don't claim to be computer-literate in these more advanced issues, I usually just stumble along until something works. But at least the Windows Updater is working, so THANK YOU! I will try the other fixes listed in other replies.

Just finished the Windows update routine and reinstalled the wifi adapter and driver. All appears to be ok now. I did both suggested fixes -- the intel rapid storage update and the Microsoft hotfix. I appreciate the clear and concise discussion you have provided here. Thanks again!

Thank you very much for adding to this thread.
It helps to confirm what we've learned.

I had similar issues after ordering the System Restore 3 disc set from Toshiba to restore a C5655 Laptop. I could not get the WIFI to be recognized and Windows Update would not work. A local repair shop isolated the problem to the INTEL MATRIX STORAGE DRIVER. Once it was removed everything else worked.

Hello all.
THANKS! This post has been a lifesaver and the solution to one of the most frustrating problems I've had recently.
I've been working with a toshiba Satellite A505-S6980. The hdd was failing. I thought I was fortunate to have already made the backup disk and believed it would be an easy swap and reinstall. I could not have been more wrong.
The hdd I bought to replace it was a Hitachi 0J11285. During the reinstall, I received about a dozen messages telling me that windows required signed drivers. When complete, most of my components we non-functional or marginally functional.
Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers and reinstalling all of the drivers for the components that were causing the problems fixed everything.
So, thanks again everyone (especially Jerry). I really appreciate the help.

Had much the same problems after replacing a crashed hard drive with a WD Scorpio Blue Sata 250 GB. Had unsigned drivers rejected and MS Update not working both with a restore (SP1), and a fresh install with a retail SP2. Found this thread and installed the Intel Rapid Storage Driver. Now, ALL IS GOOD. Update works, rejected drivers work, System is current. Thanks for the great tip!

Thank you for posting here, Gary. For completeness, would you give us the model of your computer?

Jerry - It's my daughter's Satellite L305-S5945. Since I used a retail install disk, instead of the restore disks, is there any where that I can download the Toshiba game package that was originally provided? I was able to download pretty much everything else I needed from the downloads page.

First time we've heard of this problem after an installation of Windows. I had thought it occurred only during restore. Thanks for that additional information.
That machine came with 64-bit Vista Home Premium. What did you install?

You should be able to obtain similar games from Wild Tangent.
To regain the Orb Games Console itself, you would probably need to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media, which you can get from Toshiba.

Jerry -
I did a fresh install using a retail version of Vista x64 with SP2. I activated with the machine's COA. Since the network didn't work, I installed the Toshiba drivers from a usb stick, which had all of the same problems as with a restore. I next installed the Intel Rapid Storage Driver, and most things started working right away. Could not get the wireless to work, but that seemed to heal itself a couple of hours later. I had to download a card reader package from Realtek, could not get the Toshiba one to work.
I still haven't gotten the program to create restore disks to work. It starts, and the harddrive light flashes for a while, but nothing else happens. Does it work with SP2, or is it that I didn't use an OEM disk?
Thanks for the "Wild Tangent" tip. I'll explore that.
I have recovery disks, plus an Easeus image I made on the D partition of the restored (SP1) install. I'm also making Easeus images of the current (retail SP2) install. I'm tempted to go back to the SP1 out of the box restore just to see if the Intel Rapid Storage is the magic wand all by it self, but am starting to get into a time crunch. I've spent the good part of a week on this.
Again, thanks for all the input.
Gary

Gary, it's not unusual for some things to be out of wack when you do a clean install of Windows and then add the drivers and utilities. Probably has something to do with the order of installing.

No way that's going to work. The disk image it uses resides in a hidden partition which is missing.
If you restore using the Toshiba discs, it will be replaced.
I activated with the machine's COA.
I'm surprised that worked. I've been told that the OEM COA does not work for the retail install. That's what this is all about.
ABR (Activation Backup & Restore)

You're not the only one who's curious about that. I hope you find the time.
And thank you for all the new info.

Jerry –
I went back to the beginning.
To refresh – Toshiba Satellite L305 with a crashed hard drive and no backups (not MY machine). I had attempted a restore from the Toshiba disks that "sorta" worked. I killed that and installed a retail version of Vistax64 SP2, but ran into the same difficulties as reported elsewhere in this thread. I did get that to work, but was having difficulty getting some of the original OEM extras that the restore disks installed.
Out of curiosity, I used the Toshiba disks again to restore to the original condition. I wasn’t monitoring closely, but did notice a couple of errors. As soon as the restore procedure was finished I installed the latest version of Intel Rapid Storage Driver. Before doing any thing else.
I than ran windows update. Most of the afternoon later, Windows had installed 118 updates. I then installed Service Pack 2 and I. E. 9. As far as I can tell, everything installed correctly.
So, I guess the moral of the story is, if you have a Toshiba Satellite L305, you should be able to get Windows Update working correctly.
It’s been and interesting week!

Gary, I'm so glad you went to the trouble of doing that. It demonstrates that a restore followed by the storage-driver update is the way to go.
We really appreciate your adding this to our knowledge base. Thanks again.

Just one more thing, Gary.
Your computer may be running slower than it should. See this message.
After restoring to an advanced-format disk, accessing may be slower

It's Ironic you asked that, cause my mom actually has the very same model!
She has been having a difficult time with hers as well, and is relying on ME to find answers for her!
Let me know if you have any other good tips I could use!
Thanks guys!
