[Resolved] Cannot find or enable wireless switch on Satellite L755-S5218

[ Edited ]

This morning I saw that I could not get online. Hitting Fn+F8 didn't even bring up the F8 flashcard. I uninstalled, then reistalled the Toshiba helper utility that has flash cards (the F8 flash card is back), but still I'm not online. I went into Bios, hit F9 to restore system defaults, but not online. I reinstalled the wireless driver for my model, but no luck.

Any suggestions? Every time I press Fn+F8 it says that the switch is disabled.

Do a System Restore to when everything was working properly.  Probably yesterday or the day before.

Incidentally, I believe your machine is a L755D-S5218.  I couldn't find a L755-S5218 listed.

I chose a restore point from yesterday when I know I was online, but the only change is now, when I hit Fn+F8, there is a word that says "OFF" in teh flashcard that appears. Still not online.

Is your Wireless driver listed in Device Manager under Network Adapters and, if so, what happens when you right click it?

Yes, it is listed. When I right-click on it and select Properties, it tells me that this device is working properly, believe it or not.

Re: Cannot find or enable wireless switch on Satellite L755-S5218

Where did you get the driver you say you installed?  Toshiba shows 3 different WLAN drivers for your machine--Broadcom dated 9/9/10, Realtek dated 2/10/11 and Atheros dated 12/21/10. I can't find the specs for your machine so don't know which one yours came with.  In any event, why don't you uninstall whichever one you have and reinstall one of those listed here. What you may want to try first is go to the adapter listing in device manager, right click it, select disable and then do a restart and see what happens.

I should have asked this sooner but is your wireless light at the front of the computer on?  Left click the wireless icon in the system tray, then left click your router or modem shown there, then  click the router name  and click  Properties. Under Wireless Properties, select the Security tab and tell me what is in the Security Type box and what is in the Encription Type box.

When I left-click, I get a small popup window that says no connections are available. The only link is to the Network and Sharing Center, but I don't see my router there.

You still didn't say whether your wireless light is on or not.  If we can't get to wireless properties, some other thoughts I had are worthless. I'm about out of ideas but do try one more thing--Hold down the FN key and left click your mouse on the F8 card and then left click the WiFi logo below left.

I can't tell which light is the wifi light. I went through the manual and it only indicated power and battery.

At any rate, when I hold the Fn key and then left-click on teh wifi flashcard, it does become bigger, and below the wifi signal it says Off. When I left-click on that, nothing happens at all.

I'm sorry we've been unable to solve your problem, PRR, but hope someone else might chime in with other ideas. One more thing you might try although I'm not optimistic it will do the job.  That is a System Reset.  Remove AC power, remove battery, hold down power button for about 30 seconds.  Put battery back in and hook up power and Start. Since a System Restore didn't work, I don't think this will but it can't hurt anything either.

Re: Cannot find or enable wireless switch on Satellite L755-S5218

Funny thing, I got home last night and just ignored the instructions in that last post.

I called Toshiba's tech support just now, and this is exactly what they told me to do. Long story short, I'm online on this forum responding with my laptop. It worked.

CB, thanks a lot for hanging in there with me. Much obliged.

Re: Cannot find or enable wireless switch on Satellite L755-S5218

I faced similar problem. My Toshiba laptop Satellite L755 suddenly stopped detecting wireless network. Wireless indicator light also remained off. I could not correct it by system restore or by pressing Fn- F8. After so much effort I restarted the computer in safe mode with networking option (at start press F8 to get this option) and it automatically turned on my wireless Wi-Fi and solved the problem

I had the same issue and used the System Reset idea from cbwilsha. All working great now. Thanks!

Excellent advice!  The System Reset solved the problem for me as well!  Thank you so much for posting this... and making it searchable!

Re: Cannot find or enable wireless switch on Satellite L755-S5218

Thank you cbwilsha !!

Not only did a system fix my wireless problem, but my system is booting easily four times faster that it did (it was slooooowww) - something systemic was obviously messed up, and is fixed now.

(I had installed Epson printer software, and uninstalled Hamachi LogMeIn, yesterday - those are possibilities for why...)

Will this get rid of all my files and downloaded programmes etc etc?
