New Satellite P850 Clicking

I recently bought a Satellite P850 and after 30 minutes of use I realized there was a faint clicking noise coming from the left side of the notebook. (Much lighter than a mouse click, but nonetheless noticeable during a youtube video)  I also noticed that it would click more when playing videos.  This was incredibly annoying and opened up the possibility of a hard drive issue.  I have since exchanged the notebook for a new one, but the clicking sound persists even on the new one.  I have run HD Tune and there are no error sectors, but the hard drive is slow during benchmarking (low tier hard drive) but both hard drives were slow on the old one as well as this one.  I have an old toshiba laptop (overheats), but even the older crippled one doesn't make clicking noises at irregular intervals.  I was going to stick through it, but it is getting unbearably annoying when watching movies/videos.  Does anyone have the same problem?  I doubt two new laptops would have the same problem so my assumption is it has to do with the model. Thanks.

Re: New Satellite P850 Clicking

I recommend you buy a SSD but try this..

  1. Open the "Computer" window
  2. Right-click on the drive in question
  3. Select the "Tools" tab
  4. In the Error-checking area, click <Check Now>.

Make sure you check off the box for check for bad sectors.. then restart your computer.. it can take a few hours depending on your drive..

Post the results please..

Re: New Satellite P850 Clicking

Is the clicking approximately every 10 minutes and coming from the area of the Optical Disk Drive? If so, take a look at THIS Toshiba Knowledge Base article.

Re: New Satellite P850 Clicking

I disabled the PC Health Monitor and it seemed to be working for a few minutes as there was no sound, but as soon as I opened up a youtube video the clicking noise was back.  However, the noise happens quite frequently. (Not in 10 minute intervals, but usually has a 5 sec - 1 min pause intervals)

Re: New Satellite P850 Clicking

Drive looks fine with chkdsk.. Try this program.. http://www.hdtune.com/ But before that try running windows in safe mode.. press F8.. If this is OS related then its easy to fix.. What other services have you tried to disable besides PC health monitor? Try disabling all non microsoft services in MSCONFIG..

Re: New Satellite P850 Clicking

Hi,

I just bought a Satellite P855-S5200 and have exactly the same issue. I was wondering whether you have figured out what is causing the clicking sound.

Thanks
