My laptop keeps shutting down while playing games. Help!!

[ Edited ]

Hello,

First, my laptop model is SATELLITE C660-1M0

PART NO. PSC1GE

Windows 7 Ultimate

Core i3 M 380  2.53 GHz

RAM 3GB

ATI 500 MB Graphics card.

Yesterday while I was trying out the game "Dark Siders II" the laptop shut down automatically.

And today while I was playing The Sims 3, it shut down 2 times. No Blue screens or error messages, it just shut down and the screen turns off immediately.

Can anyone please tell me what causes this?

Please, any one help me because this drives me crazy!!

It's almost invariably caused by too much heat. The computer shuts down to prevent damage.

Maybe somebody here can tell you what to do about it. I'm a software specialist.

Shutting down while playing a game.

Check tempurature.  You should be able to find an application that will show you the temp at idle and while playing the game.  Also check CPU utilization.  You will have to run the game in a window to see if that is the problem.

Start there ...

Sounds like overheating. Most likely the cooling module (heat sinka and fan) clogged with dust.

The air cannot circulate properly, the CPU overheats and laptop shuts down.

Usually dust collects betweeh the fan and heat sink.

Fan clogged with dust

Find an air compressor or canned air. Blow air into the fan grill on the bottom of the laptop and test the laptop. If the problem is gone, it was heat related.

NOTE: in some cases it's necessary to disassemble the laptop for proper cleaning.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

I have used CPUID HWMonitor utility to check the temperature.

While running The Sims 3, the ATI GPU temperature reaches at MAX of 95 ْ C and increases.

And excuse me, where can I find this air compressor? or the canned air? I have been wondering about where to find these, are these sold somewhere or something?

Staples. Air dusters can lodge dust further. I would find out how to get to the fan, remove the cover and use a vacuum cleaner while holding the fan from spinning. Carefully keeping the vacuum from touching anything. Just let it suck up the dust.

The air duster works. I have used both methods. Staples has it. Also check that the fan spins, when in use. And remove all power before cleaning. Including the battery.

Thanks, but I didn't remove the cover. I only used a vacuum at the back of the laptop below the vints and it took out 3 pieces of dust. But the fan was spinning while I was using the vacuum. Is this OK?

you should really do a proper cleaning if you want to play games on your computer that are going to put that much stress on the graphics and cpu or you could end up frying the motherboard.  It isn't hard to do and takes maybe 1 1/2 hrs.  blowing the dust back into to the computer could likely harm another component.
