DVD Drive not recognized

My DVD drive is not recognized. When I load a CD or DVD, I get nothing. When I navigate to the drive using Explorer, the resulting dialog says, "Please insert disc" or something similar.

When I use the Diagnostic tool, and check only the drive for analysis, and run the diagnostics, the result that comes up is "SKIP".

The laptop is relatively new, and I have disabled a handful of the plethora of Toshiba "crapware" services and startup programs, so I probably disabled some important service. But I can't figure out which. Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch.

Re: DVD Drive not recognized

I infer from your other message, you have Windows 7. Please give what you know about the model when you post here.

Open Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, and double-click the drive. What does Device status have?

Re: DVD Drive not recognized

Satellite P770 (PSBY3U-0NQ03J)

Windows 7 Professional

Please give us that and the bitness of Windows (64-bit?) when you post.

Try this. In Device Manager, right click the drive (the device you double-clicked) and click Uninstall. Then click Scan for hardware changes on the Action menu and reboot.

Re: DVD Drive not recognized

I would say that's "none of your bit-ness" but that might be impolite.

It's Windows 7 Pro, SP1

Intel Core i7-2670QM processor

64-bit

By the way, no success with uninstalling the drive from the device manager. I could right click and uninstall, and the drive (and category) would disappear. After I restarted the computer, the drive would show up -- already installed, without any "found new hardware" wizard running, at least none that I saw -- and the behavior would be the same.

Great idea, I should have thought of it...but it did not work. I really appreciate your help. I've attached a screen shot of some possibly relevant shizzle.

By the way, I do not think I have used this drive even once since I got the computer. No need for it yet. So it's possible the drive or driver was DOA and I never noticed until now.

Re: DVD Drive not recognized

Sorry, I don't have any other suggestions. I'm a Windows specialist. So far as I know the drive is dead.

[ Edited ]

Here's the answer - It's not a driver problem actually.

Just ran into this helping a client that I recently set up with a new Toshiba Satellite L755.

Suddenly the CD / DVD drive stopped working.  Just like many posts on the forums - it didn't show up in Computer at all.

A quick registry tweak will do the trick.  The Microsoft Fix-it didn't work for me - it returned an error.  I followed the manual removal instructions, and it worked like a charm.
