C655D won't recognize USB wireless mouse

Upon plugging in a USB wireless mouse receiver on my C655D-S5508, Windows 7 reports that it's searching for, then installing a driver, after which it claims that "your device is ready to use." But it won't move the pointer, nor does it appear in the Device Manager as existing at all.

I've tried the mouse & receiver on 4 other machines (one of which is running W7), and all work just fine with it.

What am I doing wrong?

Have you checked if drivers were available from the mouse manufacturer?

Yes, Peter. I downloaded the driver from HP's website. The laptop still doesn't see the mouse.

Do any other USB devices on your laptop work? Does the mouse display in Device Manager in Safe Mode?
