Replacement hard drive is not recognized by BIOS

I have an A65/S1067 and I bought a new hard drive because I believe the old one died. The replacement drive is a 160GB Samsung PATA and when I used the restore disk to try to format the drive and reinstall the OS I got an error message that said 'cannot determine the size of the hard drive'. Then the restore stopped and when I tried to run it again, it no longer recognizes the hard drive at all, and the BIOS won't recognize that the hard drive exists.

Now I'm wondering if the original hard drive was even bad. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to force the BIOS to recognize the drive or know what the problem might be? I don't think the new drive is bad because the restore was querying the drive to determine the size. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
