How do I record my voice using a microphone?

I want to record my voice on my Portege M200.  I have dual headphones/microphone that I plugged in.  I want to save my voice recording to make an MP3 file so I can use on a podcast or other form on a website.  Do I need other software or what sort of program would make this possible?  I'm have a very small budget.  Thanks.

Re: How do I record my voice using a microphone?

This software popped into my head as soon as I read your post:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Audacity is a free sound recorder and editor - and it's rated very highly.  I found it a little hard to understand at first, but eventually I got the hang of it.  It has a lot of features.

Hope this helps.

Re: How do I record my voice using a microphone?

Someone just mentioned it to me and I downloaded it.  I was able to figure out how to record, stop, pause and play but that's about it.  I found a manual online and printed it to see if I can learn something.  Hopefully, it won't be too hard.  If you think of anything that can help me or tips to share about audacity, I would be grateful to hear them.  Thank you!

Re: How do I record my voice using a microphone?

I remember I had to download the MP3 encoder dll...

Save it into the main Audacity folder so you can save MP3's.

I only used it to convert some old tapes to MP3 files so I never got too good at it.  If you seach Google for Audacity Podcasting I bet you'll find some tutorial type help out there.

I did find the top ten list of Podcasting software: http://podcast-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

Thanks, again.  I will try both of those and see what I find.  I really appreciate it.
