Cannot access internet through unsecured wireless networks

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5930 with Windows Vista Home Premium. It has an Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter. I have absolutly no problem connecting to my secured home wireless network. I do, however have a problem connecting to unsecured wireless networks. At first I was able to connect to unsecured wireless networks near my home, a neighbor I assume. At work I was able to connect to the unsecured wireless networks but with local/limited activity. I could not get internet access. Now even at home I can only get local access to unsecured wireless networks. I have spent hours searching the web looking to correct this problem and I have been unable to find a solution. My drivers are up to date. Please help before I pull all my hair out. Thanks!

Satellite L305D-S5930

I could not get internet access.

even at home I can only get local access

What does this mean exactly?

That your browser does not see web pages? What happens instead?

That you cannot send or receive email? What happens instead?

What happens when you're plugged into a router or modem?

Re: Cannot access internet through unsecured wireless networks

Is the unsecured network your own network?  Just because it is unsecured doesn't mean it is not protected.  And not all networks lead to the internet.

Re: Cannot access internet through unsecured wireless networks

So at home I can log onto my secured wireless network and access the internet. I was also able to log onto an unsecured network that I am assuming was a neighbors and could access the internet. In downtown Houston, where I work there are several hotspots and I was never able to log onto the network with local access only. Meaning I could not access the internet. I kept trying and tried the suggested windows automatic repairs but still nothing. Now all of a suden I can't even log onto the unsecured network in my apartments that I was able to log on to before. So in summary Access to the internet at home on my secured wireless network or a lan cable no problem. Access to the internet on an unsecured wireless network not happening.

Re: Cannot access internet through unsecured wireless networks

First off, thanks for the replies and any help you'll can give. At first when I try to log on to an unsecured network it would allow me to log on to the network but it would not give me internet access. When I viewed the network and sharing center it would show a connection to the network but then a red x on the connection fron the network to the internet. I have no problems when pluging in a lan cable or when connecting to my home secured wireless network. Also even though it shows me connected to a network I have never been able to find any other computers or printers on that network. There was also an unsecured network in my apartments I was able to log onto and view the internet. Now all of a sudden that does not work either. Basicly, my secured network allows me to access the internet fine all other unsecured networks will not. Maybe not all of the networks I have tried to log onto had access to the internet but I know some of them did.

Perhaps the owner of the network has placed security on it since your last visit?

What happens when you remove security from your home network?

Re: Cannot access internet through unsecured wireless networks

 Access to the internet..

It's still not clear to me what you mean by this.

I assume a browser cannot surf the web. What is the message from IE7?

What about POP3 email access?

What about pinging?

   ping 209.85.171.100

   ping google.com

   ping localhost

When you cannot access the internet use this at the command prompt (cmd.exe) and paste the results in your reply

   ipconfig /all

Re: Cannot access internet through unsecured wireless networks

Reset internet explorer still no luck. Then just to complicate things I unsecured my home network and was able to connect to it and the internet. So the problem seems to take place only when connecting to other unsecured networks besides my own. I am so frustrated. Tomorrow I plan on going to a starbucks or burger king which I believe have unsecured free wifi and seeing if I can connect to their networks and access the internet through them. I will let you know how it goes.

Re: Cannot access internet through unsecured wireless networks

No. I still only get local access when logged on to any other unsecured network other than my own. I want to see what happens when I go to a wifi hotspot. I just haven't had a chance yet. Hopefully, today or tomorrow.

Re: Cannot access internet through unsecured wireless networks

Actually I am facing the similar problem, my laptop has no problem to access internet through my home secure wireless network. But when I try to access through hotspot or unsecure wireless network, like at McDonald and Starbuck, where they didnt require any wep code, my laptop unable to access internet even I can connect to their wireless network. My friend has no problem to connect to the hotspot using acer notebook at the same time.

Re: Cannot access internet through unsecured wireless networks

I have to say it is nice to know I am not the only one having this problem. I have windows vista and I honestly believe that is the problem. Don't get me wrong I am not a Vista hater. I am actually starting to like it but this network/internet thing is driving me crazy. I have read elsewhere where people are haveing wireless problems with vista while a machine with xp sitting right next to them has no problems at all. Unfortunetly I still have not find a solution to my particular problem.
