My modem does not detect a dial tone and the phone works fine. Toshiba already fixed it once when the laptop was under warranty but now i have no warranty. Why would it quit working again so soon after they fixed it, about a year I think.

We can't see your computer. Which one is it? And Windows?
Most of this applies to Error 680 in any case.

My computer is a Toshiba Satillite A305 and I have Windows Vista Home Premium and I tried what you said but it did not help. I was hoping I would not have to take it in somewhere and have the modem replaced again. I tried using an external USB modem but when I installed it all that happened was a big blue screen came up with a whole page of stuff so fast I couldnt read it and I had to shut my laptop down to get rid of it.

Go here and give us the computer's part number. It should be the second item on the list.
Start > All Programs > Toshiba > Utilities > PC Diagnostic Tool

Did the modem ever work properly?
Please don't ignore those two requests.
In the meantime, try reinstalling the driver.
