I have a Toshiba Satellite A305D-S6848. For a while now, I've had problems with my webcam. When I open the Camera Assistant Software, it says "Webcam driver open fail. Please restart computer or camera." When I try to use my webcam on different programs such as MSN messenger, AIM, facebook, etc. it doesn't even recognize that the computer has a webcam (even though my webcam is internal). I've restarted the computer and have no idea how to restart the camera, though I've looked for the driver with no luck. Please help! Thanks.

Did you look under Imaging Devices?

That's not even in there...
It's as if it disappeared.

That's not even in there...
It normally means the hardware is malfunctioning.
The only way to tell for certain is to restore the hard disk to its original factory-new contents using the Toshiba recovery media.

This worked!
Closing the lid almost all the way.
Thanks PooleeHartz!
After many times unistalling downloading new driver, reinstalling, ect. I was still having problem. My screen had to be almost all the way closed to get it to open web cam. so.... Now How do i get this fixed so that it works when open? go to service store? by the way mine is an A305 6916.

My webcam did the same thing and when I opened my laptop only halfway, the webcam worked. Once I have the webcam working, I can slowly open my laptop almost all the way (~80 degrees) before it cuts out again. So, I am able to Skype if I tilt my laptop back a bit. It's doable, but annoying. Is there a permanent fix? Do the techies at Toshiba know about this?

I also have a Toshiba A305-S6858 Fusion Finish that was Best Buy's most expensive model for $800 in August 2008.
I installed Windows 7 - 32 bit software a few months ago and now would like to use the webcam for Skype.
I installed many drivers and different Camera Assistance Software for countless hours trying to get my daughters USB chicony webcam working.
After reading the close the lid half way comments I tried it and now the webcam shows up in device manager every time I half close the lid.
The camera also works when I run the Camera Assistance Software.
So if you don't mind tilting the laptop to use Skype it works but is a pain to do.
I called Toshiba and they know about this but will still charge $185 to fix it.
Thanks Toshiba for using cheap hardware!!!!!!

Just figured out by this posting that my A305-S6916 is doing the same thing! Close the lid 2/3 down and the webcam works.
