My mother-in-law bought a laptop and upon start-up I discovered that both the BIOS and HDD are password protected. Is there a way to remove them?
The BIOS password must be removed by a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider. You'll need to provide proof of ownership to have this done. Cost varies, but the last I heard it was a $75 charge. The HDD password cannot be removed by any means whatsoever. You'll have to replace the hard drive. Figure about $60-70 for that. Then you'll need to use the Toshiba recovery disks to load the operating system. No disks? Toshiba will sell them to you for $24.95. Call 800 457-7777.
All things considered, it might be best if your MIL returned the laptop and got her money back.
