Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

Hi, everybody:

I am totally new on this forum eventhou' I have my Satellite M305D-S4830 since Aug. 2008.

Well, a couple of things maybe you can help:

1) My laptop always starts trying to fix something. I used the Recovery Media 3 or 4 times now to start all over again as out-of-the box-configuration but troubles remains after startin' the laptop each and every day. I have no other program installed (not a single one) and not any Vista update done yet but, when a press Power button the device try to fix something, and force me to use the Recovery Media again. Does anybody know what could be happening here? I tell you is really annoying. I'm thinking on getting rid of the device.

2) I downloaded all the drivers and utilities I found in this site but one question prevented me to do anything: Should I install only the Drivers and utilities stated under the Windows Vista 64 tag or Should I install all other Windows Vista Utilities that don't specify 32 or 64 bits as well (there are lots of Vista upgrades/updates not stated on any of both systems).

3) I found fingerprint Utilities upgrades but as far as I know my device has not this utility. Also I found that older version (Toshiba FM Tuner Utility for Windows Vista (64bit) (v1.8 r2; 05-30-2008; 4M) looks a better one that a newer version (Toshiba FM Tuner Utility for Windows Vista (v1.8; 02-05-2009; 4M), unless you tell me this last one applies to both 32/64 bits versions.

Sorry for my confusion. I hope you can help.

Thank you.

Re: Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

Your unit was designed with 64 bit OS Vista, so that iswhere i would concentrate updates around.  If you are using the original supplied Recovery Disc then it will restore to factory specs, thus no concern unless you wanted to update a device driver.

Since Mantas you state it is ''always fix something", we need to know what the error is being interpreted at boot. Disable the Automatic Restart :  use this = in Computer, right click, then locate Properties, locate Advanced, then in Startup and Recovery  ''uncheck automatic restart'', thus you will be able to see the error, post here to assist further.

Use Device Manager as your guide and just delete the exclamation marked error device, reboot and allow the new Hardware Wizard to reinstall device.

Your unit does not have the Fingerprint device. I would use Toshiba FM Tuner Utility for Windows Vista (v1.8; 02-05-2009, if your  unit supported such device.

Re: Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

Hi Defender:

Thanks for your advise.

I do not use the laptop for a couple of days. But I noticed the following: if I shut down and then restart the laptop a couple of minutes later it boots smoothly. But when I start the device the following day, then it starts with repair manager tool. Always works this way.

A couple of minutes ago this was the case and these are the Test Result:

Test Performed

Name: Windows boot log diagnosis

Result: Completed succsefully. Error code= 0x0

Time taken= 0 ms

and after a lot of succesfully details the info says:

Root Cause Found:

Boot Critical File

C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt

Repair action: File repair

Result = Failed. Error code =0x490

Time taken = 12184 ms

Repair action: System Restore

Result: completed succesfully. Error code = 0x0

Time taken = 115051 ms

That is it. Anyone have a clue on what could be happening here.

FYI, I have already updated my pre-installed Windows Vista 64 bits to SP2. More, I have all the MS updates installed but the system starts with the Repair Manager anyway.

The only updates a did not install at all are the ones provided by Toshiba, even the bios updates. I have some fear that I could mess the things more than now.

Thanks for your help.

Mantas.

It means that Startup Repair has run automatically. And it apparently has completed a System Restore (which replaces all the system files, including Ntoskrnl.exe.

Sounds like you have an intermittent hardware error of some sort.

See if running chkdsk /r (check for bad sectors) cleans things up.

Re: Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

Hi Jerrry & Defender:

I did what you told me. Scanned disk and checked it but everything looks normal. At least, there were no advice of something was wrong.

I have been using the notebook the whole weekend and I can remark the following behavior:

After been disconneted during the night, the device launched the Start Up Repair and the message is: "C:\windows\system 32\ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt".

Then I used the device the whole afternoon and it was restarted several times. The notebook booted normally.

Then I shut down the notebook and wait around 10 minutes. I pressed power button and the device started normally.

Then I shut down it again and wait 3 hours. Now the notebook ran the Start Up Repair with the same error: file ntoskrnl.ex is corrupt.

So it looks that the problems emerge when the device is powered off for a period of time longer than 10 or 15 minutes, even if it is the power cable remains plugged to the wall.

Do you have any clue?. Any suggestion?.

I read something on the net about this subject (the corruption of notskrnl.ex) and many people talk about a virus or the antivirus behavior. Could the Norton 360 pre-installed software have something to do with this?.

Finally, do you know if Tosshiba provides international warranty? I'm out of the states right now.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

Still seems like you have an intermittent hardware error to me.

But in case I'm wrong, see if running the System File Checker helps.

Some Windows Vista functions may not work, or Windows Vista may stop responding

Sorry, I don't know about Toshiba warranty policies. I hang around here to answer Windows questions.

Hi Jerry:

I did what you told me. Result are copied below. I do not fully understand the meaning of the results. Something about "Setting.ini" of Windows Sidebar and lots about the AMD processor, DLL, XML and GPD files, maybe drivers, but not sure at all.

If you are so kind to take the time and read the results, maybe you can discover what is happening.

Thank you again in advance.

Re: Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

Still seems to me you have an intermittent hardware malfunction.

The only way to tell for sure is to restore the hard drive to its factory-new contents using the Toshiba recovery media.

See the section Hard Drive Recovery Utilities beginning on p. 61 of your User's Guide.

Re: Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

Hi Jerry:

Thank you for your fast answer.

On the subject, I Used the Recovery discs and started again with an out-of-the-box installation 4 times in the last 45 days.

At least, with the last installation, the system gets recovered after each Start Up Repair process finishes. In former recovery processes, system could no even works properly.

In the end, if the laptop have an intermittent hardware malfunction, how I could find which piece of hardware is the cause?.

If it is the hard disk, am I able to choose the sectors to installed the operation system bundle and avoid a bad sector or some of the kind?.

By the way, if systems could not find ntoskrnl.exe when boot, could I install this exe file manually?. iread several forums talking about this exe file disappering because of an antivirus action. Does it sound probable?

Thank you.

Re: Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

You might want to test memory. Leave the test running over night.

   Windows Memory Diagnostic

If there are just a few bad sectors on the hard drive, they are routinely locked out by the newer drives' firmware. But anything can happen with intermittent errors.

Since the problem continues after restoring the hard drive to factory-new, it's pretty much certain to be due to hardware. One typically takes the machine to a Toshiba tech at this point.

Re: Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

Hi Jerry:

I was about to run Windows memory diagnostic, but reading carefully the user's guide I found out that it says "You can test all types of RAM that run on x86 based computers".

My M305D-S4830 runs on Vista x64 edition.

Also found that other tool called memtest is also developed for x86 systems.

Do you know any other memory test tahat runs on x64?

Also, could be useful to to run HD Tune tool?

Tehank you.

Re: Satellite does not start properly & driver/utility installation (M305D-S4830)

Your hardware is, strictly speaking, x86-64, which will run anything that runs on x86.

The memory test does not involve your x64 Windows. So it will run just fine.

Hope that clarifies the situation.

[ Edited ]

Hi Jerry:

While waiting to be sure if I can run the memory test you told me, I run the Memory Test that comes with VISTA (Control Panel/System & Maintenance/Administrative Tools...), yesterday night. Result as copied:

Is the test you told me similar to the one I did, or is it more accurate?. Is there anything else I can do before take the satellite to the techs?

Anyway, I' ve already contated the Customer Service Techs. But until I take the device to them on Monday, I would like to do some more research on what can be going on each and every time the notebook boots with Start Up Repair and the "ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt issue".

I think is better if I can tell them what test I already did, maybe that can give them a clue.

Again, thank you for your assistance.

Mantas.

I run the Memory Test that comes with VISTA..

I"m sure that's adequate. No need to run the other one. Be sure to let it run overnight.

I Used the Recovery discs and started again with an out-of-the-box installation 4 times in the last 45 days.

That's about all you can do.

Good luck!
