CDDVDW TS-L632P ATA Device problem

I'm running Windows Vista 6.0, Build 6002. The CD/DVD device will not operate. The Device Manager shows the message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I've tried to obtain a driver update but only find utilities to scan and repair that cost money. I should be able to solve this without an purchased utility program.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks you.

Always tell us which computer you have. See the label on the bottom.

Have you tried the Microsoft Fix it?

Re: CDDVDW TS-L632P ATA Device problem

I just tried Microsoft Fixit. It didn't resolve the problem. It said the driver had to be reinstalled. I have the original disc for the Toshiba but expect I can't use it since the CD/DVD drive does not start.

What suggestions do you have?

Thanks.

Re: CDDVDW TS-L632P ATA Device problem

One way to find out if the device is malfunctioning is to use the driver in the BIOS.

Locate a known-good bootable disc and try booting from it.

Load the disc, restart the computer, press F12 at the Toshiba screen, set the boot priority, and see what happens.

Re: CDDVDW TS-L632P ATA Device problem

I tried to boot from the manufacturers disc and was able to  do so. So the drive functions. But it seems all I can do from that disc is to recover the whole system which would wipe out my data.

How do I get a new driver? When I click on Update Driver for the CD/DVD in the Properties window for the device, the system responds that I have the latest driver.

Thanks

Re: CDDVDW TS-L632P ATA Device problem

I followed the instructions in the last Fix It you suggested, did the manual registry changes (deleted two entries), restrated the computer and the problem was resolved!
Thanks!!

Interesting. That registry situation doesn't usually produce Code 10.
