Hi,
New here. been using a Toshiba Canvio 320 GB usb portable hard drive,
e05a032bau2xk , for a few months but now it's acting very strange. Please help me figure out how to trouble shoot it or my system.
My O.S. is Dell win xp, sp 3, home ed. The portable has some very important data on it but I can not get into the drive now and have no idea if it's Windows Explorer or the Toshiba external drive. I have ran checks on it with Device Manager and it shows it working correctly but not when I try to go into the external drive or take things out of it! Wish I could be more specific about what the Toshiba drive is doing. All I can say is that it turns on an off, diappears from the the Windows Explorer list and the Toshiba light lashes a lot when idle. I have unplugged it, restarted the computer, ran clean-up and repair jobs on it, defragged and some other mainenance actions but it just doesn't work right anymore.
I just plugged it in again, and it turns on and off. An "autoplay" box appears with some options but it doesn't give me access to the Toshiba drive at all! Not much else to say..........HELP!
Just now, somehow I got the Toshiba drive to open up so I went to Tools and restored all the "default" settings I could. Now the drive seems to be working correctly again! Don't know how long it will stay good so I moved some of the backed up data onto the main hard drive just in case.
Wish me luck...............
Jim

Since I wrote this post, I have been through HELL with this HDD! As I write this, I am formatting the HDD and looking all through Toshiba's site for anything that might either help me get this HDD working or send it in before the warranty runs out. It's a 2011 edition. What is particularly disturbing is how hard if not impossible it is to get any help or feed back from Toshiba although, it's late Friday and I'll have to wait until Mon. to call their tech line. I keep thinking the device is OK and it's a computer problem but I have tried everything imaginable to "fix" the HDD and it just keeps performing badly or not at all. It's a wonder the HDD has stayed on long enough to format it (for the 4th time). It worked perfectly at first but then, strangely began disappearing from the Explorer window and turning on and off (light blinking rapidly). I really would like to use it if I can trust it...........
Please offer me some kind of hope or feedback about how to get Toshiba to help me or any tips you might have to get this HDD to work again.
thanks,

P.S. Please tell me if this issue needs to be posted elsewhere.

For USB hard drives, Jim, call Toshiba at (888) 592-0944 or (949) 583-3305.
I'm guessing they answer 24/7.

Don't know how many times I've encountered problems with flaky enclosure electronics. More often than not the hard drive will pass all tests when connected directly to a computer but then starts acting up, or not at all, when put back in the enclosure.

It looks like you have a faulty HDD. You might want to call the Acclaims dept @ (888) 592-0944 (toll free) or (949) 583-3305.
